In January 2007, Zhang was spotted kissing a mysterious man at a New York basketball game. The man was identified as 41-year-old, Israeli multi-millionaire and venture capitalist, Vivi Nevo. The two were again seen together at an Oscar party in Los Angeles. Nevo, a venture capitalist, is a major shareholder in Time Warner and an early backer of The Weinstein Company with whom Zhang is purported to have a multi-film deal. Nevo was reported to have dated Kate Moss (an iconic English supermodel) openly and rumoured to be seeing Jeisa Chiminazzo (a Brazilian supermodel).

Many celebrities watched the New York Knicks play the New Jersey Nets on January 19, 2007. Zhang Ziyi is seen here at the game with Vivi Nevo, a wealthy gentleman sitting intimately with her for the first time, who is later being reported to be her boyfriend.

Why Is Zhang ziyi Famous?

After her enlightening (and physical) performance in 2000’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Zhang Ziyi proved her mainstream appeal with 2001’s Rush Hour 2. She wowed audiences in 2004’s House of Flying Daggers, and continues to take on an impressively eclectic mix of roles.

Though her career accomplishments are few and her fame limited mostly to Asia, Zhang Ziyi is still miles ahead of anything we were doing at her age.

In 2000, Zhang Ziyi broke out with the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and she hasn’t looked back since. She upped her fame factor with a role in the Jackie Chan-Chris Tucker buddy cop sequel, Rush Hour 2. In 2002, she reemerged in the spotlight with Hero, and again two years later with House of Flying Daggers. Zhang Ziyi also had starring roles in 2005’s Memoirs of a Geisha and Good Cook, Likes Music, and she has continued to take on a number of roles in Asian films. With a slew of projects in the works for 2008 and 2009, Western audiences can expect to see a lot more of Zhang Ziyi.

Zhang ziyi can play Villain too

Don’t be fooled by Zhang’s innocent look, she was cast to play the villain in the summer 2001 sequel to the successful comedy Rush Hour, appearing opposite the comedy duo of Chris Tucker and martial arts master Jackie Chan. She was cast in the film without knowing a word of English, and despite having taken English lessons, she speaks strictly Chinese in the film (with subtitles).

1. House of Flying Daggers

House of Flying Daggers is a 2004 action/romance film directed by Zhang Yimou. The film is in the wuxia genre, similar in style to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon; Hero; and Warriors of Heaven and Earth. House of Flying Daggers differs from other wuxia films in that it is more of a love story than a martial arts film.

The use of strong colors is again a signature of Zhang. Several scenes in a bamboo forest completely fill the screen with green. Near the end of the film, a fight scene is set in a blizzard. The actors and blood are greatly highlighted on a whiteout background. Another scene uses bright yellow as a color theme. The costumes, props, and decorations were taken almost entirely from Chinese paintings of the period, adding authenticity to the look of the film.

The film is set in 859 AD. The once great Tang Dynasty is now in decline. Numerous rebel groups have formed, the largest of which is the House of Flying Daggers, based in Feng Tian county. The Flying Daggers steal from the rich and give to the poor, gaining the support of the locals.

The local deputies have managed to kill the leader of the Flying Daggers, but the rebel group only becomes stronger, due to a mysterious new leader. Jin and Leo, two police captains, are ordered to kill the new leader within ten days.

In order to accomplish this, they arrest Mei, a blind dancer who is suspected of being the daughter of the old leader. While Mei is incarcerated, Jin and Leo decide to let her go to track the mastermind; Jin will pretend to be a lone warrior called Wind, and break her out of prison. This will gain her trust, and hopefully, Jin will be led to the headquarters of Flying Daggers. The plan works, but Mei and Jin fall in love on the way. They are followed at a distance by Leo; Jin and Leo meet secretly to discuss their plans. Jin jokes about his seduction of the girl; Leo warns him sternly against getting involved.

To add authenticity to the deception, Leo and his men ambush the pair: the fight is, however, a fake. Further on, they are attacked again, but this time their assailants are apparently for real: Jin and Mei battle for their lives, being saved only by the intervention of an unseen knife-thrower. Furious, Jin confronts Leo: Leo explains that he has reported the matter up the chain of command and his general has taken over the pursuit. Jin realizes that he is now expendable. 2. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

The fictional story is set in the historic Qing Dynasty in China. The date of the story is during the 43rd year of Emperor Qianlong’s reign (i.e. 1778).

The story follows two martial arts warriors, Li Mu-bai (Chow Yun-Fat) and Yu Shu-lien (Michelle Yeoh), the former now an accomplished swordsman for the Wudan school. Li surprises Yu with the revelation that he intends to give up the Green Destiny, a legendary sword that has been in his keeping for many years. He explains that a revelation during a period of deep meditation has caused him to rethink his life. He requests Yu (A Master in Martial Arts), who has inherited a retinue of armed escorts from her father, to take Green Destiny to Sir Te, a long-time friend, for safekeeping in Beijing. In the meantime, Mu-bai intends to commemorate the death of his master, who was murdered long ago by Jade Fox (Cheng Pei-pei), a woman seeking to learn the secrets of Wudan.

Zhang Ziyi’s Profile

Zhang Ziyi (born February 9, 1979, in Beijing) is a BAFTA Award-nominated Chinese film actress, with a string of Chinese and international hits to her name. She has worked with renowned directors such as Zhang Yimou, Ang Lee, Wong Kar-Wai, Chen Kaige, Seijun Suzuki and Rob Marshall.

Zhang joined the Beijing Dance Academy at the age of 11, and at 15 she entered China’s prestigious Central Academy of Drama (regarded as the top acting college in China).

When Zhang’s parents suggested she go to the dance academy, she was skeptical. While at the boarding school, she noticed how catty the other girls were while competing for status amongst the teachers. She would cry each night and morning, and on one occasion ran away from the school.
